ASD Ribbon Cutting FinalAbington School District hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, August 26, 2022, to commemorate the grand re-opening of the additions and renovations to Abington Senior High School and the Stephen A. Schwarzman Center for Science and Technology.

The event marked the culmination of the additions and renovations project that began with a groundbreaking ceremony in November of 2018 at the same location where the ribbon-cutting was held — in what is now the outdoor classroom at the entrance of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Center for Science and Technology. Alumnus Stephen A. Schwarzman, a graduate of the Class of 1965, generously donated $25 million to the project in an effort to help inspire a new generation of future-ready learners.

The new science and technology center includes science, art and general classroom space, and was designed to accommodate the addition of 9th grade students into the building as part of a districtwide grade span reconfiguration set to be implemented in September. Previously, Abington Senior High School only housed grades 10-12. Other additions throughout the school building meant to create space for the additional grade level included the construction of an auxiliary gymnasium, career center and a new cafeteria. More than 93 percent of the existing 1956 facility has also been renovated, as this project was the first major renovation the building had undergone in nearly two decades.

The reconfiguration of the grade spans has also helped pave the way for new, innovative programming at Abington Senior High School, including a college and career Pathways Program, focused on the skills needed to compete in the evolving workforce and prepare students for the nation’s fastest-growing industries and jobs of the future. It provides high school students more flexibility to choose classes across a range of subjects and specialties, providing greater exposure to a variety of industries and career fields earlier in life.

“I am so proud to see many years of planning and community input–including through our Superintendent’s Committee for Reconfigured Grade Spans–come to fruition with the re-opening of Abington Senior High School and the implementation of our grade span reconfiguration,” Superintendent of Abington Schools, Dr. Jeffrey Fecher, said. “I am thankful for all of the contributions and hard work from many individuals, as well as the support from our residents, to make this project possible from start to finish. A new era for Abington School District starts today, and I am excited to usher in this next chapter alongside a tremendous team of educators, aimed at benefiting the students of Abington Schools for decades to come.”
