On the morning of Wednesday, October 6, 2021, students throughout the neighborhoods of Roslyn Elementary School walked to school together in recognition of International Walk to School Day. In addition, all week, the students were invited to participate in daily activities in recognition of Walk to School Day. The event was held in partnership with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services and the Montgomery County Planning Commission as part of a Safe Routes to School program.
Walk to School Day is a global event that encourages communities to walk and bike to school on the same day, and students across Abington School District were welcomed to participate. In the Roslyn school community, Department of Health and Human Services staff were located at four remote drop-off locations along the walking routes to school. Staff members, including Principal Dr. Kevin Osborne, led children on a short walk to school and caregivers were encouraged to participate as well. Together, they formed a “walking school bus”.
The four starting locations included:
- Fernwood Ave. & Johnston Ave. in Roslyn
- Brookdale Ave. & Radcliffe Ave. in Roslyn
- Colonial Ave. & Susquehanna Rd. in Roslyn
- Maple Ave. & Meyer Ave. in Ardsley
The “walking school bus” ended at Roslyn Elementary School at the start of the school day.
Throughout the course of the year, as part of the Safe Routes program, Montgomery County Health Educators will continue to provide pedestrian and bicycle safety education for students, and participate in school events to provide information on transportation safety to parents/guardians. In addition, the Montgomery County Planning Commission will conduct a walk audit to identify any safety issues that may be present in the school environment. Representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services will meet regularly with representatives from the school and community to discuss ways to promote walking and biking and improve school safety.
Safe Routes to School is a national initiative to advance safe walking to school, improve the health and well-being of school communities, and build healthy, thriving communities. This Safe Routes partnership aims to advance support for healthy communities, foster a commitment to equity in active transportation, and share expertise to improve walking and biking to school.
