Every year, the Abington Senior High School community rallies together at the holidays for “ASHS Gives Back,” an initiative to benefit local families who are affected by cancer. In partnership with Kisses for Kyle—a local non-profit organization that offers a variety of services to families fighting childhood cancer in the Delaware Valley—students and staff work together to adopt, and donate gifts to, local families at the holidays.
Over the past few weeks, each department within the high school—from administration and guidance to math and social studies—was responsible for buying gifts based off family wish lists, which are coordinated through Kisses for Kyle. The gifts are brought into school and then the Senior High’s Garden Club members spend a morning organizing and wrapping the presents before they are picked up by the organization.
As an added component, each year the high school girls basketball team also partners with Kisses for Kyle to sponsor two local families and honor them before their annual holiday game, which this year will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 17. One of the families they are sponsoring this year is an Abington School District family affected by pediatric cancer, for whom the players and coaches bought gift cards and presents, which they will present on the basketball court ahead of the game.
