This past Sunday, 47 ninth-grade students from Abington Junior High School volunteered at the Philadelphia Marathon, arriving at 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of Kelly and Sedgley Drives where they worked at the Team in Training water stop for the marathon runners. Team in Training is a group that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Our students worked until about three o’clock in the afternoon. To have that many students show up and work until mid-afternoon would have been very impressive under normal conditions, but Sunday’s weather was brutal – very cold and extremely windy. The representatives from Team in Training and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society were very impressed with our students and how they completed whatever tasks they were asked to do, including setting up thousands of cups of water and Gatorade, cheering for the thousands of runners on the course, and picking up the trash that was blowing all over the running course. Social studies teacher Betina Roher from the Junior High School organized the students.
