Abington Senior High School’s first-ever Girls Flag Football team is officially playoff-bound, as the team finished their regular season ranked first in their division, with an undefeated record of 8-0. The final two wins of the regular season were against Archbishop Wood (43-34) and North Penn (34-12). Abington is slated in a division among eight other local schools.
The first playoff game will be played at home at Schwarzman Stadium on Tuesday, May 9. If Abington wins the first game, they will advance to a second later in the day. The advancement to playoffs alone is a big victory already for the roughly 20 students, many of whom are playing the sport for the first time.
Sponsored by the Philadelphia Eagles, this is the league’s second year, and Abington’s first year participating. The league has grown from just 15 teams last season to over 38 for 2023. The aim is to empower female athletes and encourage broader flag football participation across the Greater Philadelphia area.
The championship game is scheduled for May 17 at the NovaCare Center.
