Earlier this fall, Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fecher received an email from the parent of an Overlook Elementary School 4th grade student, Chase Schlagnhaufer. Chase approached his parents earlier in the school year and had asked for assistance in raising money to help feed people in need. Together, he and his parents came up with a plan to hold a family walkathon on his birthday, and asked people to pledge $1 for every mile they walked that day. They walked 7 miles in total, and Chase was able to raise $300, which he donated to the Inter-Faith Food Cupboard in Roslyn in the form of gift cards.
Dr. Fecher was very moved by Chase’s story, and so proud of his commitment to helping others in need. In an effort to keep the charitable momentum going, Dr. Fecher invited the staff at the Administration Building to join in Chase’s mission by facilitating a drive for the Inter-Faith Food Cupboard ahead of Thanksgiving.
From Monday, November 1 through Friday, November 19, a collection box was stationed in the Administration Lobby for employees or community members to donate non-perishable food items or toiletries to help benefit families in the immediate area. Items donated included everything from soup and cereal, to tissues and toothpaste.
After the collection was complete, Dr. Fecher invited Chase to the Administration Building to see how he inspired others to pay it forward. Chase was even able to help load up the boxes into a District van so that it could be driven to the food cupboard to donate just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
