Superintendent Update regarding Snow Procedure

Dear Abington School District Families,

In anticipation of a snowstorm for the Greater Philadelphia region later this week, I write to provide you in advance with a procedure for this school year.

The storm is expected to begin Wednesday and continue into Thursday. You can anticipate that we will adhere to the following plan:

  • Wednesday – Wednesday is a scheduled remote learning day for all Abington School District students, which means there will be no change to the instructional schedule. Please plan to have your child follow the direction of their teacher(s) as usual. Meal distribution will still occur at the Junior High bus loop on Wednesday from 7:00-9:00 a.m., per our normal schedule. If there is a shift in the timing of the storm earlier, separate communications will be sent.
  • Thursday – Should the weather forecast hold for this first storm of the season, Thursday will be observed as a traditional snow day with all schools closed and no classes being held. Weather reports may fluctuate greatly over the next 24 hours. We will aim to make a decision as early as possible tomorrow so that our families can plan accordingly.
  • Future Days of Inclement Weather – After one traditional snow day this school year, please anticipate that any future snow days will be virtual instruction days, including this Friday should our area still be impacted by this week’s storm and we need to remain closed.

To ensure you receive alerts pertaining to any potential closures or delays, please be sure your parent/guardian contact information is up to date in Skyward as we will notify families via the Message Center and our automated phone system. In addition, any closure information will be available on our District website. You can access communications resources and instructions here, and you should have received this information in the safety newsletter that was sent to you via Skyward last week.

If you have any questions, please contact your student’s school principal. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority in our ongoing navigation of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impending inclement weather.

    Regards,

    Jeffrey S. Fecher, Ed.D.

    Superintendent of Schools
