Students who participate in the VIBE and IMAGINE clubs at Abington Junior High School and Overlook Elementary School in Abington School District got a hands-on learning experience at the Elmwood Park Zoo on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.
Abington Junior High School VIBE and IMAGINE students who have demonstrated excellence in science paired up with younger VIBE and IMAGINE students at Overlook Elementary School as part of a buddy program. After studying select animals that can be found at the zoo, the older students took the elementary children on a tour throughout the park to teach them about the various animals. Other activities throughout the day at the zoo included a scavenger hunt, group lunch and ice-breaker activities.
VIBE and IMAGINE aim to support and empower students of color in Abington schools. Regular meetings give them a forum to self-advocate, improve self-image, and generally enrich their lives. The purpose is to assist the participating students in embracing their talents and goals as well. Members participate in discussion groups, special events, and also have opportunities to be exposed to positive role models so that they can become one as well, with emphasized attributes including perseverance, fortitude and teamwork.
One example of these opportunities to be exposed to positive role models is the trip to the Elmwood Park Zoo, which served as an end-of-the-year culminating activity that celebrates the students’ hard work and accomplishments throughout the school year.
