Once again, Abington Senior High School students took home honors at the annual Greenfield Youth Film Festival, the largest and most competitive event of its kind in the Philadelphia/Montgomery/Bucks county areas. More than 20 schools submitted roughly 300 films for the 2020 competition, which are judged by industry professionals. Abington Senior High students did extremely well at this prestigious competition, earning the following awards during this year’s ‘virtual’ ceremony, held on April 22:
- Madison Young, Jon Herley, and Dillon Haviland won the award for Best Comedy for their film, “RIIINNGG.” This is the fifth consecutive year in which Abington has taken home the top honor in this category.
- Jasmine Williams placed second in the Narrative category for her film, “BOB,” which was co-produced by Alicia Whisman. Grayson Cantrell acted in the lead role.
- Williams and Whisman also won the Best Sound Design award for their experimental film, “Drowning.”
- Valerie Neske tied for first place in the Best Animated film category, with her work, “BOO!“
- Cantrell, along with Samantha Shackleton, Maria Chirinos, Olivia Fiorella, Colleen Rath, Aidan Kaye, Piper Kull, and Joey Nolan, all produced and/or participated in films that made it into the final rounds of judging.
The Greenfield Youth Film Festival is a forum for young filmmakers to collaborate, create, and showcase their work while expressing their creativity through film. It includes a full-day academic workshop taught by university professors and professionals in the film industry to provide the students with skills and relevant film-based education in a hands-on environment. The year culminates with the awards night when students are highlighted and recognized publicly for their expression and effort and given prizes in the form of money, trophies (known as “Greenies”), experiences, and other film-related gifts.
