The cast and crew of this year’s musical at Abington Senior High School is currently hard at work preparing for the opening night of their 2020 production: Chicago (High School Edition). The backdrop of the Roaring 20s—an influential time period for music, literature, film and fine art—is fitting 100 years later for the start of a new decade of the Arts in ASD.
Chicago (High School Edition) is a high-energy dance satire that takes a look at the sordid tales of criminals in the 1920s. Originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, Chicago is full of dance numbers that will get everyone’s toes tapping. Throughout the development of the show, students have been discussing the Roaring 20s aspect, the importance of the decade, and how the upbeat vibrancy of the performance serves as a stark contrast to the darker materials being presented—fame, fortune and acquittal in the tale of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.
Over 100 Senior High students have been working on the show since Thanksgiving, between the cast, the pit, and the crew. Chicago (High School Edition) runs March 5-7, with shows at 7 p.m. all three days, and an afternoon matinee on Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for students/senior citizens, and $12 for general admission, available through the Senior High main office.
