On Pi Day, Highland Elementary School hosted a kickoff assembly for its “One Book, One Highland” school program, in which for six weeks, all teachers read the same book to their classes simultaneously. Occurring during National Reading Month and fitting for Pi Day, it was unveiled to students that this year’s reading selection is called Pie, a book by Sarah Weeks.
The announcement was made following an activity in which students solved math problems to reveal the numbers of Pi. Then, donned in chef hats and aprons, the support staff surprised the students by bringing out the books and distributing them to teachers in pie boxes. Once the books were “unboxed,” teachers provided background on the story’s plot by acting out skits on stage. Afterward, students returned to their classrooms to jointly read the first chapter.
Throughout the six-week program, students will be encouraged to hold conversations about the book as the school reads it together, which aims to build connectivity among classmates — in addition to promoting literacy. Other activities will include trivia questions, prizes and a special closing assembly to celebrate the conclusion of Pie.
