At Rydal Elementary School, E. B. Lewis, illustrator and author of more than 70 children’s books, retold his childhood experiences, how he found his calling to be an illustrator and children’s book author, as well as demonstrating the steps to illustrate a children’s book. Mr. Lewis also shared stories from his numerous books and his watercolor art with Rydal students and staff.

E.B. Lewis has illustrated over seventy books for children and won many awards.  Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Lewis was inspired by two artist uncles.  As early as the third grade, he displayed artistic promise. Beginning in the sixth grade, he attended the Saturday morning Temple University School of Art League and studied with Clarence Wood. During four years at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, Mr. Lewis majored in Graphic Design & Illustration and art education. After graduating, he taught art in public schools for twelve years. Presently, Mr. Lewis teaches at the University of Arts in Philadelphia, continues to paint and illustrate, and is a member of The Society of Illustrators in New York City.  A few years ago the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota purchased a collection of original watercolors from Mr. Lewis’ first twenty-five children’s books. His work is owned by numerous private collectors and sold by art galleries throughout the United States.

Photos show Mr. Lewis at assemblies with kindergarten and grade 1 as well as 5th and 6th grade students
